Key Control Systems Drive Safety and Security Practices at the DMV

A trip to the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) is usually not anyone’s idea of a fun outing, but it is typically a safe outing. From video surveillance cameras to patrolling security guards to key control and management systems, DMV facilities are well protected from potential threats or dangerous activity.

These multiple levels of security are necessary to help ensure the protection of secure areas within the facility that may be equipped with computers or servers used to record and store confidential licensing data. Key control and asset management systems are often at the core of the protection solution and enable maximum security of these access controlled spaces with minimum vulnerability.

Keys used for opening/locking doors to the restricted areas, along with keys for accessing equipment cages, driver’s license test machines, license plate storage cabinets or even cash boxes can be safely and securely stored in the tamper-proof key control cabinets when not in use. The systems are designed so that only pre-authorized DMV employees may access a key using an approved user code, an access identification card or a pre-registered biometric finger- or hand-print. If the criteria entered matches the information stored in the system database, the key cabinet will unlock and the necessary key can be removed or returned. The other keys will remain locked in place and the activity is automatically recorded.

At any time, management can view the status of any key in the system; quickly locate any key in the system; determine who currently has which keys out and when they are scheduled to be returned; or who has had keys out, for what areas or equipment and when. The system software can run activity reports and sort based on different criteria making it possible for DMV administrators to generate useful and practical management reports, then analyze the information to maintain maximum control of access and security issues.

While a necessary trip to the DMV may not register high on the scale of fun things to do, it is calming to know that the premises are secure and confidential information is being protected.
